FAC for Mairzy Doates
editHi all, as a followup to my FA view on the Japan Cup, I've submitted a FAC for Mairzy Doates, the Cup's first winner. While there's not a huge amount of sources on her life, she's an interesting horse to read about, so if you're interested in reviewing please drop a line on the reivew page. :) RandomEditsForWhenIRemember (talk) 20:09, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
Adding the Japanese horse racing taskforce to the horse racing banner
editHi all, the Japanese horse racing task force has been up and running for about 8 months now. Since the amount of articles about Japanese horses is getting pretty large, would anyone object to me raising a request to update the current WP banner to allow for a Japan sub-banner, so it's easier for us to keep track of everything? Based on my understanding the additional code for the request is just adding:
|tf 1 = {{{japan|{{{japanese|}}}}}}
|TF_1_LINK = Wikipedia:WikiProject Horse racing/Japanese horse racing
|TF_1_NAME = the Japanese horse racing task force
|TF_1_NESTED = Japanese horse racing
|TF_1_IMAGE = Gold Ship IMG 6824 20140323.JPG
|TF_1_QUALITY = yes
|TF_1_ASSESSMENT_CAT = Japanese horse racing articles
|tf 1 importance= {{{japanese-horse-racing-importance}}}
|TF_1_MAIN_CAT = Japanese horse racing articles
|TF_1_HOOK = {{WPBannerMeta/hooks/tfnested
|tf 1 = {{{japan|{{{japanese|}}}}}}
|TF_1_LINK = Wikipedia:WikiProject Horse racing/Japanese horse racing
|TF_1_NAME = Japanese horse racing }}

Standardising results tables
editcompare Aston Machan's results table (non-standard) to Vodka's results table. (Standard)
Also on another note, how comes in results tables, UK Class 1 races are merely "listed" whilst Japanese and Hong Kong Class 1 (to 3) races have Jpn(x) and C(x) grades? GarethBaloney (talk) 20:16, 11 August 2026 (UTC)
- To be fair if we're looking at every horse on here it's the Japanese horses' pages that aren't the standard; most of the American/French/English horses follow the same format used on Secretariat's page. A few pages have slightly difference approaches - eg when working on Mairzy Doates and Pay the Butler's tables I thought it was worth specifying the race grades (and for PtB removing the odds column since his French races don't have recorded odds} - but most of them follow that expanded look and forgo the less important details like bracket entry. I'm admittedly not sure those would be missed if removed; there's so many headers anyway it's forcing a font size shrink to render them correctly.
- (As an aside, while I personally like the subheader look to break up the ages, the approach is a MOS:COLHEAD violation. Zero interest in changing that on the majority of the Japanese horse pages, but one to remember if you/anyone is interested in getting a specific JP horse to GA level).
- Anyway, for Machan's case, I would definitely add the Grades/Groups at least; it's not going to be obvious at all to readers that she's a multiple graded stakes winner at the moment - the one mention of them (Sprinter Stakes being G1) comes only at the end of the section about the race, far after the race is introduced. This could have just been a porting issue? I'm fairly certain Vodka's table was taken directly from jp.wiki's, so maybe that was a copy and paste job whereas Machan's table wasn't. I do believe 90% of the Japanese horses follow Vodka's table format with a few slight variations, but I don't think there's ever been a talk about it on the english wiki here or in the JP taskforce.

For your other point, iirc Class 1 races in the UK is just a classification of the different top groups; ie you can have a "Class 1 Group 1" race (the Derby and a "Class 1 Listed" race (Windsor Castle Stakes). In contrast Jpn(x)/C(x) are national level grades rather than classifications (so no "Jpn 1 Listed" races). Admittedly I'm not sure why we don't mention the Class system on english races more often, I suspect it's because everything lower than C2 is unlikely to get a wiki page. - Thank you for the answers. It is also pretty bad how there are still several G1 winners without results tables on their page, regardless of which format they choose. (the biggest ones being mostly Montjeu and his progeny, including Hurricane Fly)
- I still have to wonder why the tables on Japanese horse articles are different! GarethBaloney (talk) 17:15, 12 August 2026 (UTC)

- Statistical tables of racing careers have been going on a continual tweek since this group started. Also there are nuances from each corner of the globe from where racing is held - USA, UK, Ireland, Australia, Sth. Africa, Sth. America, Japan, other European countries and the Middle East and HK. Each author with their own interests has their input in the way the table is formatted and what data is presented. In terms of presenting only events Listed through to Grade/Group 1 are noted. All others are not. But in terms of sorting there is. And if the table has sort capabilities then the ranking should follow in terms of class. For example in the US and Canada - Maiden Claiming is considered lower that Maiden Special Weight etc. Also some countries such as Panama, Indonesia, India have classifications which is considered lower than major countries. Check the International Classification system for this. My comment for Japanese horses on English wiki pages that the references should be in English and I have found that Umanity, jbis.jp are quite good.Brudder Andrusha (talk) 08:27, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

- Personally for me, I rather happy the horseracing community racing form's format are non-standard and as long as the information is correct, well-presented and understandable, I don't have any problems and I think no need for standardization. Lowyat Slyder (talk) 18:21, 14 August 2026 (UTC)
Hurricane Fly
editI have a reference to the recently deceased horse having been assessed at 175 by Timeform but he does not appear in that article's list of all-time highest-rated performers over hurdles. Can some other knowledgeable individual have a look, please? Billsmith60 (talk) 12:37, 23 September 2026 (UTC)

I suspect the Irish Times may have got this wrong - on HF's official Timeform page they list their top rating for him at 171 (and 108 for flat). I guess with two conflicting sources the best plan would be to update HF's rating on his page and use the original Timeform's page as a reference. RandomEditsForWhenIRemember (talk) 13:20, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you! Clearly you have a higher level of access to the Timeform site than I do and can see the 171 rating not visible to me Billsmith60 (talk) 19:05, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
